ComicVerse

ComicVerse is a web-based comic book streaming platform that provides users with an immersive e-reader experience across a wide range of genres. Designed with accessibility and engagement in mind, the platform not only delivers diverse comic content but also serves a social purpose—addressing literacy challenges in American prisons by leveraging the visual and contextual strengths of comics. Built with security, compliance, and user experience at its core, ComicVerse offers an innovative approach to digital comic consumption.

My Contribution:
  • Led the full development of the ComicVerse web application, delivering both frontend and backend functionality
  • Built a seamless web-based e-reader for immersive comic consumption
  • Developed an admin dashboard for managing comic content efficiently
  • Integrated Google Analytics and built custom tracking features to monitor most-read comics, pages visited, and popular categories
  • Ensured smooth integrations across the stack with clear and proactive communication
Key Challenge Solved:

During development, I faced two major challenges that required rethinking the data structure and implementing advanced UI features:

  • Comic Issue Navigation: Initially, the database design did not account for navigating between comic issues (e.g., Spiderman 3). When the feature was requested, I backed up and restructured the database to include an issue column. I then built logic to extract and separate issue numbers from titles, enabling “Next” and “Previous” navigation. To keep the reading experience distraction-free for tablet users, I implemented a hideable navigation bar at the bottom of the e-reader.
  • Alphabetical Comic Filtering: On the “All Comics” page, I implemented a complex letter-based navigation system. Users could filter comics alphabetically, which required careful optimization of queries and UI rendering to handle a large and diverse dataset smoothly.

These solutions improved both the usability and scalability of the platform, ensuring a more intuitive and seamless experience for readers.
